Dorothea Tanning

American painter, 1910-2012

Dorothea Tanning was an American painter, sculptor, and writer born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1910. She studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and later moved to New York City where she became associated with the Surrealist movement. Tanning's work often featured dreamlike and surreal imagery, exploring themes of identity, sexuality, and the subconscious. She was also known for her sculptures, which often incorporated found objects and materials. She was married to the artist Max Ernst and lived in France for many years before returning to the United States in the 1950s.
