Vicente do Rego Monteiro

Brazilian artist, 1899-1970

Studied in Paris, beginning 1911, at the Julian, Colarosi and Grande Chaumière academies where he absorbed nascent modernist tendencies. He returned to Brazil at the outbreak of WWI, and was active in Rio de Janeiro and Recife. He returned to Paris in the 1920s. After 1927 he devotes most of his time to poetry. In the 1930s he took up auto racing, and the manufacture of schnapps in Pernambuco. In 1939 he established a publishing house called 'Renovação.' In the 1940s he published his own writings, which prefigured the Concrete poetry movement of the next decade.
