Andrea di Cione Orcagna

Italian architect, 1320-1368

Brother of Jacopo di Cione, Matteo di Cione (died ca. 1390), and Nardo di Cione (died 1365 or 1366). Orcagna was enrolled in the Florentine Stonemason's Guild in 1352, a decade after he matriculated in the Arte dei Medici e Speziali as a painter in 1343. Giorgio Vasari (in his Lives of Seventy Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, 1568) states that Orcagna was trained by Andrea Pisano, also active as both a sculptor and architect, but he was supported for membership in the Stonemason's Guild by Neri di Fioravanti.
