Alphonse Bernoud

French photographer, 1820-1889

Bernoud was active by 1840 in Genoa, Italy, where he was in partnership with another photographer named Lossier. The two operated a daguerreotype studio which specialized in colouring daguerreotype portraits with watercolours, a process invented by Bernoud. In 1850, Bernoud moved to Naples, Italy, and opened a photographic studio. Circa 1854, Bernoud was the first photographer to introduce cartes-de-visite and stereographs to Italy. In 1855, Bernoud opened a second studio in Florence, Italy. In 1857, Bernoud photographed the effects of a severe earthquake on the area surrounding Naples, Italy. ...

During the 1860s, he photographed Naples harbour and the many military ships that docked there. In 1862, Bernoud photographed the Royal Court of the Bourbons and the Naval aristocracy and in 1864, he published an album entitled 'L'Italia contemporania, Grand'Album de celebrita artistiche, letterarie, diplomatiche, politiche e militari. Ca. 1873, Bernoud returned to France and opened a studio in Lyon which operated until 1886.
