Jan Štursa

Czech sculptor, 1880-1925

Founder of the modern movement in Czech figurative sculpture. From 1894 to 1898 he studied at the School of Sculpture in Hořice, and under Josef Václav Mylsbek at the Prague Academy of Fine Art 1899-1904. In 1904 he received a grant to study abroad. In Paris he was influenced by Medardo Rosso, and came into contact with symbolist literature and art. He taught for most his adult life, beginning in 1908 as teaching assistant at the Academy of Art, then as professor as medal engraving in 1917. He was appointed head of the School of Sculpture there in 1919.
