Jailed Indonesian labour leader Muchtar Pakpahan speaks to reporters at a Jakarta hospital where he is being treated for a number of ailments, March 4. Pakpahan said he had told Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Stanley Roth that Washington should not give aid to Jakarta until President Suharto implements reforms. Roth was in Jakarta along with presidential envoy Walter Mondale, who told President Suharto that implementing reforms prescribed by the International Monetary Fund was the only way out of Indonesia's deepening economic crisis.
