Trial of Charles I, 1649. On 1 January 1649, the "Rump" Parliament resolved that the king was guilty of treason by "levying war against the parliament and kingdom of England." On the 20th the trial of Charles commenced in Westminster Hall before a high court of Commissioners, with Bradshaw as President. Charles laughed at hearing himself called a traitor, and refused to plead, denying the authority of the court. On the 27th the President passed sentence "That the court being satisfied that Charles Stuart was guilty . . . did adjudge him a tyrant, traitor, murderer, and public enemy . . . to be put to death by severing his head from his body."
