Mrs Patten. In 1856 the American clipper Neptune's Car, from New York to the Californian goldfields, had an adventurous passage. The first mate proved mutinous and incompetent, and the worry gave Captain Patten brain-fever which left him stone blind. The second mate had never learned navigation, so Mrs Patten, the Captain's 24-year-old wife (who had amused herself taking sights on previous voyages) took command, and not only sailed the ship for nearly two months through the worst of weather, but made a perfect landfall and brought the ship safely into San Francisco. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Sea Adventure, issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939.
