Image description

Perkin Warbeck in the Pillory, 1498. Warbeck, who was servant to a Breton merchant trading in Ireland, attracted attention about 1491. Ireland was strongly pro-Yorkist, and Warbeck was used as a tool to disturb the government of Henry VII. The kings of France and Scotland and the Emperor Maximilian supported his claim to be the younger of the sons of Edward IV who were murdered, and therefore legitimate king of England. Warbeck landed near Land's End and advance to Exeter, but fled on the approach of the royal troops, and afterwards surrendered. He was compelled to make public confessions in the pillory at Westminster and in Cheapside. Illustration for one a set of cards on Historical London, issued by Hignett's Cigarettes in 1926.
