Image description

The Clock. The "Time Stick." In very early days men must have judged the time by watching the sun moving across the sky. The simple "time stick" marked the passage of time by the movements of its shadow on the ground. The next step was the measurement of the shadows which led to the invention of the sundial. The Clock Tower, Westminster. The clock in the old Palace of Westminster was put up in 1288, not far from the site of the present clock, "Big Ben," whose deep, solemn voice is now broadcast throughout the land, is the second bell of his name. "Big Ben" the First was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, first Commissioner of Works in 1856. Illustration for one of a set of cigarette cards on the subject of Past & Present issued by Wills in 1929.
