Image description

A paint rag and pouncing papers, which would have been used by William Kent and his team of artists to transfer designs to the walls and ceiling of the Queen's Staircase. Graphite would have been blown through the pin pricks in the paper to mark the dsign onto the painting surface. The papers include a 'Greek-key' design which can still be seen surrounding the large central panel of the ceiling. The papers were discovered behind the dado rail of the Queen's Staircase in 1953
