Image description

These accessorised library reading chairs, fully equipped with moveable candles and adjustable reading trays, were featured in an 1810 issue of The Repository of arts, literature, commerce, manufactures, fashions, and politics. Printed by Rudolph Ackermann – and known as Ackermann’s Repository for short – this monthly British periodical chronicled the Regency styles and fashions of the day with accompanying hand-coloured illustrations such as this one in every issue. Ackermann’s featured 1432 aquatint plates over the course of its 22 year history, boasting the pictorial talents of draughtsman Augustus Pugin, figure drawer Thomas Rowlandson, and the entrepreneurial publisher himself.
