Grenade-thrower, 1750 (inset) Grenadier Guardsman, 1939. Grenadiers (i.e. grenade-throwers) were first attached to the King's Royal Regiment of Guards (as the Regiment was then known) in 1678. The present name of the famous Grenadier Guards in not, however, directly connected with grenade-throwing, but was awarded in commemoration of great gallantry at the Battle of Waterloo, when the Guards defeated the French Imperial Guards. On 29 July 1815, the Prince Regent gave his approval to the Regiment's new title of "The First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards." Our illustration shows a grenade-thrower of the 20th Foot, 1750, with (inset) a picture of a First or Grenadier Guardsman of to-day. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939.
