BELGRADE REPORTER HOLDS BURNING NEWSPAPER, 1998-11-04 (photo)

Filip Mladenovic, a journalist of the Belgrade satirical weekly Nasa Krmaca ("Our Sow") holds a burning copy in the centre of Belgrade November 4. The magazine printed a single copy and then burned it in protest against the new information law, widely seen as curbing press freedom. The Belgrade weekly Evropljanin has been fined nearly $250,000 for articles allegedly threatening the constitutional order of Serbia. In the background is a statue of early 20th century playwright Branislav Nusic, who spent his whole life mocking the then monarchy and government, and even went to prison for it. EV/WS
