General Hans Speidel in Bad Honnef in 1957. He fought on almost all fronts in the Second World War. He was E. Rommel's closest associate and was part of the resistance against Hitler. In 1954 and 1955, he represented Germany in the negotiations on joining NATO. On 1 April 1957, Speidel became commander-in-chief of the Allied land forces in Central Europe, based in Fontainebleau, but was forced to vacate his post in 1963 under pressure from de Gaulle. Hans Speidel was born in Metzingen on 28 October 1897 and died in Bad Honnef on 28 November 1984.
