From the early 1920s Davidson settled at Walberswick, a Suffolk coastal village and a popular art colony, which appealed especially to artists who rejected the formality of academy painting of the time and who aspired to paint en plein air. He rented a riverside studio on exceptionally tall stilts, and painted the surrounding landscape and the young female inhabitants of the town with no clothes on.
