Image description

Australian Museum Director Professor Michael Archer takes a close look at an 1866 Tasmanian Tiger embryo in Sydney May 14 which scientists believe they may be able to use to clone the now extinct animal. The embryo is preserved in alcohol, not formalin, which means it's DNA has remained intact. The last tiger died in 1936 after it was mercilessly hunted down by white settlers. It was the last of the carnivorous marsupial species called Thylacine that began life in the ancient land mass called Gondwana about 65-100 million years ago.
