"The African Rhinoceros", African scenery and animals, London, 1804-05 (colour litho)

In 1801, Samuel Daniell ventured to what was then believed to be the remotest point of South Africa ever visited by Europeans as part of an expedition dispatched by the governor of the Cape Colony. While acting as the appointed secretary and draftsman on this mission to what is now Botswana, Daniell sketched the animals he encountered – such as this rhinoceros – with notable accuracy and attention to detail. Upon his return, the Daniell transformed these field sketches into a stunning portfolio of aquatints that were later published in England by his brother.
