Image description

Stickerin Und Spinnerin. Translation: Embroiderer and Spinner. Sewing, embroidering, knitting, as well as weaving and spinning used to be the main skills of every girl. Writing and reading usually came second and was often only an advantage of the nobility and the educated bourgeoisie. Even then, women working from home was often an important source of income for the whole family, in addition to working for their own needs. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).
