Image description

George-Frederick Chester (fl.London 1861 - 1889). Oil painting on canvas, Flora St Clair Paint, Mrs Samuel Theodore Mander (1857/8 -1905) by George-Frederick Chester (fl.London 1861 - 1889), signed and dated 1881. A half-length portrait of a young woman, turned slightly to the left, gazing at spectator, in a white lace dress and holding flower to chest, against floral background. Flora Elvira St. Clair Paint (1857-1905) came from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her father Henry Paint was from a Guernsey family who had emigrated to Canada; he eventually became a member of the Canadian Parliament. In his diary for December 1873 Theodore Mander described Flora, who was at school in England with his sisters, as a "very merry girl". In 1879 they were married in Halifax. After Theodore's death Wightwick Manor passed to her, but her health was poor, and she died in London on 15 April 1905. Wightwick Manor, West Midlands (Accredited Museum)
