Image description

Creator: Reginald Carpenter Scale: Unknown. A waterline model of the Red Star Line passenger vessel Belgenland, as completed as a passenger liner and cruise ship (1923). The hull is painted black with a fine red stripe at main deck level running the entire length of the vessel. The decks are painted off-white with mid-grey cargo hatch covers. The long, flush forecastle includes two hatches with a pair of tall ventilators placed between them, set side by side. Aft of the hatches is a derrick mast with a crow's nest. The forward cargo deck has a single hatch. The main superstructure has a long promenade deck, above which is a shorter, open deck. At the front of the boat deck is an open bridge flanked by bridge wings that extend beyond the ship's sides. There is an open pilot house above. There are a total of 20 lifeboats stowed on davits on the boat deck, on the port and starboard sides, some of which are double-banked. Between them are three funnels, painted black with broad horizontal white stripes. A void abaft of this main superstructure accommodates two small hatches and a pair of derricks. Aft of this is a secondary superstructure consisting of two open decks on which are stowed two pairs of lifeboats that are double-banked. Aft of this are a further two hatches served by a derrick mast between them. Aft of these hatches is a short raised deck with a pair of lifeboats. The aft, or stern, deck includes a hatch, two tall ventilators and secondary bridge wings. Inscribed on the base of model is "15".
