A Savage Lesson, 1606. Soon after Jahangir's accession, his eldest son Khusru rebelled unsuccessfully at Lahore, and the Emperor thought he would give him a warning by compelling him to ride on an elephant between long lines of his companions impaled on stakes. Jahangir's own words describing this are: - "I directed a number of sharp stakes to be set up in the bed of the river, upon which thrones of misfortune and despair I caused the three hundred traitors who had conspired with Khusru to be impaled alive." Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
