Image description

During the winter months, when most of Russia's Baltic ports are ice-bound, the Russian Fleet is enabled to put to sea by the aid of the ice-breaker Ermack; The vessel was built in England by the firm of Sir W.G. Armstrong (1810-1900), Whitworth and Co., to designs by Admiral Makaroff(1849-1904), and is able to clear a passage through ice over twenty feet thick;
