Parallel to his career as a jurist, he was for twenty years legal advisor to the Protestant bishop of Osnabrück, Prince Frederick of Hanover, Duke of York and Albany, son of George III of England and Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; he also tried his hand as a historian and theoretician of political economy in which, in contrast to his contemporary Adam Smith, he was a precursor of some ideas of the German Historical School and the market economy. He also wrote the tragedy 'Arminius' and a collection of 'Miscellaneous Writings' in which he addressed aspects of human nature with humor.
