Image description

Creator: Rowe Undress coat of a Lieutenant of blue wool face cloth. Double-breasted coat with a double row of eight gilt brass buttons. The button features a rope-twist rim around a fouled anchor surmounted by a crown on a lined ground. The collar is a very early shawl or roll collar and the underside has been heavily stitched, using running stitch, to both shape and reinforce it. The top of the sleeve, unlike the uniforms of the 1820s, is not gathered, but straight and the coat has slightly sloping shoulders. At the very top of the shoulders, by the collar are eyelet holes for the epaulette -- at the bottom is a narrow strip of gold lace. It should be noted that while both shoulders have a strip of gold lace for the epaulette, the only eyelets are on the right shoulder. The sleeves terminate in round cuffs. On each are three gilt brass buttons, arranged horizontally, above faux blue twist button holes. At the wrist are two small gilt brass buttons and working buttonholes, the cuff features a small slit on the side. The inside of the cuff is lined with a small section of black velvet, fixed with cross stitch, while the rest of the sleeve is lined with white linen. On the front of the coat, the four bottom buttonholes are finished and cut as key-holes to accomodate the shank of the button, while the top four buttonholes are only finished on one side, indicating that the coat was meant to be worn with the top unbuttoned, as a roll collar. Moth damage on the collar reveals that it is interlined with a red wool fabric. There are two hip buttons at the back of the coat and two three pointed pocket flaps, partially stitched down, have faux blue-twist buttonholes. There is a central back vent and the fabric on both sides has been turned and hemmed. The tails overlap slightly and a very narrow and tapering. There are two buttons, both at the very bottom of the tails. (See notebook for continued description)
