East and West Africa Medal 1887-1900 awarded to Sepoy Pir Bakhsh, 28th Punjab Infantry. This medal was awarded for general service in a number of small campaigns and expeditions in East and West Africa. Although usually awarded in silver, it was sometimes issued in bronze for native servants, bearer and drivers. The rim of Pir Bakhsh’s medal is engraved: 'M'wele 1895-6', a reference to the M’Wele expedition against a hostile tribe led by Chief Rashid who were engaged in raiding trade caravans.
