Portrait of U.S. Army Maj. Robert Anderson, taken in Mathew Brady’s studio in New York City shortly after his surrender of Fort Sumter, late April 1861. Note how the lapel of the Major’s overcoat has been turned back so as to reveal the oak-leaf cluster on his epaulette, as well as the haggard expression on his face from a nervous breakdown which he had suffered while in command. The forage cap in his hand bears a crossed-gun badge with the numeral “1”, representative of the 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment. Original image has been repaired by BiM
