Temple of Apollo, Plutonium

Video description

A temple dedicated to Apollo Lairbenos, the main deity of Hierapolis, was erected during the Late Hellenistic period (circa 146-30 BC). Apollo was linked to the ancient Anatolian deity Lairbenos, but ancient worship also revolved around the cult of Cybele among other deities. Now only the foundations of the Hellenistic temple remain. This temple, with a plan of 20 by 15 meters, stood within an enclosed peribolos. Being built against a hillside, the peribolos was surrounded on three sides by marble Doric columns. The remains of the temple's upper part date to the reconstruction from the 3rd Century AD in Roman style. Some building material from the earlier Hellenistic temple was used in this reconstruction. Smaller in size, now only the Roman Temple's marble floor remains. It is assumed that the Temple of Apollo was deliberately built over an active geological fault running underneath, known as being part of the Cave of the Plutonium. Temples dedicated to Apollo were often built over sites with geological activity, such as the Temple at Delphi. In the 4th Century AD, with the introduction of Christianity, the Temple and Cave beneath ceased to serve pagan cults, the cave was blocked and the temple dismantled.
