Royal Navy ship on which Napoleon surrendered on 15 July, 1815; Bellerophon was stationed at the entrance to the French port of Rochefort to prevent Napoleon from escaping to America after his defeat at Waterloo on 18 June; launched in 1786, Bellerophon had previously taken part in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, seeing action in the Glorious First of June in 1794, the Battle of the Nile in 1799 and Trafalgar in 1805; after 1815, Bellerophon was used as a prison ship until 1836, when she was broken up; in Greek mythology, Bellerophon was a hero and destroyer of monsters; from a series of illustrations of ship's figureheads produced as cigarette cards by Players;
