Title
She Flies - A film about the Concorde
Medium
35mm
Date
1969 (C20th)
Description
This iconic award-winning film documents the supersonic Mach 11 aircraft, the Concorde 001, and its first flight from Blagnac, Toulouse, France in March 1969. The end of the film features the first flight of the Concorde 002 from the UK, which occurred five weeks later. Produced and directed by John Edwards, and shot in 35mm Techniscope (2.6:1) using six cameras, (which were booked well in advance, and thus delaying the start of a Clint Eastwood ‘spaghetti western’). The film was released by Paramount with cinema distribution. It contains the ONLY colour footage of Concorde's first flight (the BBC broadcast it in B&W). The film, which has a specially composed soundtrack by Charlie Crane of The Swinging Blue Jeans, was shot over 4 days, quickly edited and on cinema screens in two weeks. Among several other awards, it won the Gold Award at the 1969 Venice Biennale, where it opened the festival.
