Image description

Traction engine, 1902. Photograph, Boer War (1899-1902), 1902. During the South African conflict the British used traction engines to pull guns and supply waggons and transport troops to places not served by railroads. Despite this, the army still needed to use thousands of oxen and mules to move its supplies. From an album of 245 photographs taken by officers of 5th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
