8-inch howitzers of 135th Siege Battery at La Houssoye on the Somme, 25 August 1916. Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916. The 8-inch howitzer had a range of about 12,300 yards (11.24 km), and fired a 200-lb (90.8kg) shell. Most heavy artillery weapons were used by units of the Royal Garrison Artillery, whereas the Royal Field Artillery tended to use lighter guns that were mobile. From an album of 22 official photographs.
