A drawing of Ajax falling on his sword, Clytia looking up at the sun, and Narcissus gazing at his reflection with Echo by him; at the right Hyacinthus and Adonis, Crocus and Smylax at their feet; Flora at the centre, and Apollo in sky. This is a study for a painting now in Dresden. It depicts the goddess Flora, at centre, surrounded by figures whose myths accounted for the origins of certain flowers. Among them are Ajax, whose blood coloured the carnation, falling on his sword; Narcissus gazing at his reflection in a vase of water; and Hyacinthus clutching his head after being struck by a discus thrown by Apollo.
