Description
This scene by Frederick Leighton represents the death of the Italian Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) in 1446. Brunelleschi was famous for building the large dome of the cathedral in Florence, shown in the background of the picture. In keeping with the subject, Leighton used a Renaissance-influenced style. He varnished the picture to give the image more impact. Leighton also produced an oil painting of this subject. Leighton's heroic historical subject pictures made him very successful, and he was knighted by Queen Victoria.
