View of the dome of the Chigi Chapel, decoree of mosaics, designed by Raffaello (Raffaello Sanzio) (1483-1520) 1513-1514 (View of the dome of the Chigi Chapel designed by Raphael) Rome, Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo (Church of Santa Maria del Popolo), Chigi Chapel (Cappella Chigi). The dome is decorated with mosaics executed by the Venetian Luigi da Pace after Raphael's cartoon (1516). The central roundel represents God, the Father, surrounded by putti. Eight mosaic panels show the Sun, the Moon, the starry sky and the six known planets as pagan deities; the figures are accompanied by the signs of the zodiac.
