James Buchanan, Baron Woolavington (1849-1935);Scotch whisky blender, businessman, philanthropist and racehorse owner; supplied Buchanan's whisky to the House of Commons; given Royal Warrant to supply Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales in 1898; generous benefactor to universities, hospitals and gave the huge sum of £50,000 to restore the nave of St. George's Chapel at Windsor; won the Epsom Derby in 1922 with his horse 'Captain Cuttle'; depicted here in race course dress with top hat; from the series of 'Straight Line' caricatures produced as cigarette cards by John Player & Sons; the golden age of cigarette cards was from the late 19th century until the Second World War and were immensely popular both as collector items and as a source of instruction, entertainment and amusement before the widespread use of television and radio;
