Charles Bailly's (Baillie) carving in the Tower of London. Charles Bailly (1542-1625) was a conspirator against the reign of Elizabeth I on behalf of Mary Queen of Scots. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1571, where he carved this inscription. Inscription reads: 'The most unhappy man in the world is he that is not patient in adversities. For men are not killed with the adversities they have, but with impatience which they suffer'. A Short History of The English People (Vol II) by John Richard Green (London: Macmillan, 1893) (originally published in 1874).
