Autograph: Letter from John Knox to Sir Nicholas Throgmorton, English ambassador at Paris, thanking him for his efforts to preserve him against 'the practises of Sathan', and saying that he has written a few words to the Queen (Elizabeth) and more fully to the secretary (Sir William Cecil). Written in Edinburgh 6 August 1561. A facsimile of the letter to Queen Elizabeth, written on the same day, is given in 'National MSS. Of Scotland', pt. Iii., 1871. In it Knox complains of the attempt of Mary, Queen of Scots to prejudice him with Elizabeth and other princes on account of his tract, 'The First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstruous Regiment of Women', 1558.
