Taglioni, a dark chestnut mare ‘as quiet as a lamb and excessively pretty’ had been given to Princess Victoria by her uncle, William IV, in 1834. Hector was a Scottish deerhound, a breed nearly extinct at the time, and he had been given to the Princess in June 1835 when he was ‘quite a puppy’. He grew very large very quickly but was ‘as gentle as a lamb, and very playful’.
