During the First World War the American General Pershing was insisting that US troops should fight under their own commanders, and should be well prepared for any battle they went into. There is little doubt that he was right, and when the 'Doughboys' went into the major battle at Chateau Thierry, they fought in a manner that belied, their reasonably short time at the front.
