Jahangir receives Prince Khurram on his return from the Mewar campaign (19 February 1615), 1656-57 (opaque pigment & gold on paper)
f.194b: Jahangir receives Prince Khurram on his return from Mewar (plate 38) This illustration shows a moment during the extended audience on 20 February 1615 when the Emperor Jahangir welcomed back the victorious Prince Khurram (the future Shah-Jahan) following the successful Mewar campaign. In this depiction, the aged Prime Minister I'timaduddawla stands immediately below Jahangir, with his son (and successor) Asaf Khan bearing a tray to his right. Hayat Khan is the figure closest to the jharoka (balcony). Karan Singh (wearing dark red) the son of Amar Singh, the defeated Rana of Mewar, is positioned amongst the courtiers and nobles on the left-hand side of the illustration - the Emperor's right. Jahangir was interested in the European prints and paintings brought to India by travellers and missionaries. Here the upper walls of the jharoka are decorated with copies of and after European paintings - to the right an image of the Virgin Mary and to the left an image of Christ holding a globe. In the most prominent space below the jharoka the artist has inscribed and signed the illustration. He hopes that in return for satisfactory artistic performance he might receive payment for his work. The text relevant to this illustration records: 'The Imperial retinue camped outside of Ajmer, and by imperial command all the amirs went out to greet [the Prince]. The next day, Sunday [Prince Khurram] attained the felicity of paying homage to his mighty Father. His Imperial Majesty was so kind and appreciative that he took him in an embrace.'
