Abraham Lincoln (1809-65), 16th President of the USA, armed with sword and axe, confronts Jefferson Davis (1808-89), President of the Confederacy, armed with sword. Between them is a bale of cotton marked "Is cotton king?" Under Lincoln is the caption "For one or both of us the time is come, if slavery is fit to live, let freedom fall." Under Davis, "Oh, ho, if that's the case come on, old Link and down with him who first cries--Hold! Let's have a drink." An eagle perched on a barrel of "prime mess beef" and holding the U.S. flag and Brother Jonathan in a tall hat thumbing his nose at Davis range on Lincoln's side. Behind Davis, a man sits with a glass on a whiskey barrel, holding his hands over his ears, and an African American man tramples the C.S.A. flag as he thumbs his nose and kicks his foot at Davis.
