Image description

Portrait of Count Balthasar Castiglione, the Italian ambassador, writer and confidant of Leo X. The original painting by Raphael, which was painted in 1515, came on auction in 1639 in the sale of Lucas van Uffelen to Amsterdam. Today, this portrait is in the Louvre. Rembrandt, who was very interested, made a pen and ink sketch, probably at the auction itself, because compliance with the painting is just a general. And next to he wrote the following note: "De Conte batasar de kastylyone van raefael - verkoft voor 3500 gulden - het geheel caergesoen tot Luke van Nuffeelen heeft gegolden f 59456 - Anno 1639". = "Count Balthasar Castiglione by Raphael - sold for 3500 fl. - This whole load (probably boatload from Italy) of Lucas van Uffelen made in total 59456 fl.". After this sketch Rembrandt etched his self-portrait in the same year. Even Rubens copied this painting by Raphael. Pen drawing in brown ink. Federzeichnung in Bister. Wien, Gerlach & Schenk. Verlag für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe.
