Description
Written by Voltaire (1694-1778) in 1753 and adapting the Chinese play: The Orphan of Zhao, Voltaire saw it as a story exemplifying morality: that genius and reason have a natural superiority over blind force and barbarism. The reading was in 1755. Diderot, Turgot, d'Alembert and Condillac depicted grouped around a bust of Voltaire; Reading of the Tragedy 'L'Orphelin de la Chine' in the Salon of Madame Geoffrin, or An Evening at Madame Geoffrin's, 1812. Marie Therese Rodet Geoffrin, leading female figure in the French Enlightenment.
