Video description

HD footage. British General Montgomery began an 80-day counter-offensive that culminated in the British capture of Tripoli and Rommel’s defeat in 1943. This remarkable footage was taken under brutal combat conditions. Four cameramen were killed in action, seven wounded and six others captured by the Germans. Views of the western desert where the North African Campaign was fought in WWII, hot days and bitter cold nights. Soldiers of 8th Army sleeping bundled up in blankets. Huge sand storm cloud in the distance. German forces under the Command of Rommel continue to push back the British 8th Army toward El Alamein and Alexandria. Shows German half-tracks, tanks, planes, Rommel in Scout Car advancing. Low aerial view of Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez. Using the natural terrain defenses of the Quattara Depression and the Mediterranean Sea British Field Marshall Auchinleck had his troops dig in, lay protective mines, build gun emplacements, and waited. German artillery and German planes attacked the British 8th Army. Winston Churchill visits the 8th Army with news of re-enforcements and gave command of the British 8th Army to General Montgomery. British wartime factories, and women working in defense plants and factories. In the United States the Sherman tank with it's 75 MM gun was coming off assembly lines. Shows large tank manufacturing defense plant. Shows RAF Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft being removed from shipping crates in Nigeria. The Hurricanes are re-assembled. Shows Hurricane fighter taking-off from newly constructed airfield after assembly and in-flight to provide air support to British Eighth Army.
