Image description

This is a flight suit worn by American aviator Amelia Earhart (1897-1937). In 1932 Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and in 1935 the first woman to fly solo between Hawaii and the continental US. She and her husband helped fund her flights by arranging for her to carry, autograph, and sell pieces of mail. Her 1937 attempt to become the first female pilot to fly around the world ended in tragedy when her plane vanished. The search for the plane was the greatest air rescue attempt made to that date. Neither Earhart nor her navigator was heard from again.
