Image description

Lady Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard, Duchess of Sutherland (1806-68) A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing black dress with white lace collar and central brooch. A wreath in her hair, where grey scarf is attached falling over shoulders and down front. Holds pink roses in left hand crossed over right at front. This is a three-quarter-length copy, with the background changed from the Great Staircase at Stafford (now Lancaster) House to plain, of the splendid whole-length painted in 1849 (The Sutherland Trust, Dunrobin). Another three-quarter-length copy (by implication, retaining the background) was with Spink in London in 1927, and with Newman in Paris in 1936; another, with a different background, painted for her daughter, Lady Elizabeth Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Argyll, is at Inverary Castle. A head-and-shoulder copy was painted by W. Corden in 1849 and given to Victoria for her birthday in 1852 (the Queen had sent the Duchess a copy by Corden of her daughter, Lady Constance Leveson-Gower, for Christmas 1850; see Millar, cat. no. 1032, p.335 and under cat.no.928, p.321& pl.820). She was the daughter of the 6th Earl of Carlisle and wife (1823) of the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, who bought Cliveden in 1849 and commissioned Barry to rebuild it after the second fire. She was the mother of the four children depicted in the circular ceiling decoration by Hervier above the staircase. Four time Mistress of the Robes, she died in 1868.
