Image description

First Lieutenant Donald Brewer III, an infantry officer assigned to the 66th Aviation Brigade of the Washington Army National Guard at Fort Lewis, Washington, models the Army's new black beret with the blue flash patch in this photo taken June 8, 2001. Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki has designated the black beret to be the standard headgear Army-wide on June 14, 2001 which is the Army's 226th birthday. The controversial beret had been the headgear of the Army's special operations Rangers since 1975. Shinseki said the beret will be a symbol of the Army's transformation to a lighter, more deployable and unified force. REUTERS/Anthony P. APB/ME
