INDIGENOUS MAN WALKS THROUGH FOG IN SAN ANDRES LARRAINZAR, 2003-12-17 (photo)

A man walks through a foggy street on his way to work in San Andres Larrainzar in the highlands of Chiapas December 17, 2003. San Andres Larrainzar was where Zapatsita rebels and the Mexican government signed an accord in 1996 which it was hoped would bring peace to Chiapas and meet the demands of indigenous rebels. The Mexican government subsequently failed to implement all the clauses of the agreement. The Zapatistas have unilaterally declared autonomous communities in their strongholds throughout Chiapas after loosing patience with the Mexican government and its failure to address their demands. This December marks the 10th anniversary of the Zapatista armed uprising when indigenous Mexicans rose up to demand their rights and customs be respected. PICTURE TAKEN DECEMBER 17.
