Mardi Gras was a well-established tradition in New Orleans by the mid-1800s, although the role of King of Carnival wasn’t introduced until 1872. By the time this composition was published, the King was an important feature of the celebration. Lithography by A. Hoen & Co., Richmond, Virginia. Edward Taylor Paull (February 16, 1858 – November 25, 1924).
